About the categories and
points:
The
C Race is for beginners new to bike racing and cyclocross.
The B Race is for the intermediate racers with some off-road experience,
typically Cat-4s and Sport class mountain bike racers, or an off-road rider who
isn't quite as fit as they should be.The A Race is for experienced and fit
cross racers, or anyone fit enough to make up for lack of cyclocross technique.
This group would be Cat 1/2/3s, Expert/Pro mountain bike racers, and Ironman
qualifiers looking for some sprint training.
The Junior Class will be included in the C Class that's anyone under 18. if you would like to race another class you're entering as a B or A class rider. There are no Junior classes in A or B.
SRS
WinterCross is run as a points series finishers will receive points according
to their finish which will then be totaled at the last race.
All finishers will
receive 5 points. Category upgrades will move up with half credit. Final race will
be scored as double points down to 5 Note: Series points now follow this
schedule: 20,16,14,13,12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5
Entry Fees:
All races are $15.
Juniors (10-17) are only $5. this includes racing in B or A class We were juniors once too, and we remember how much
spaghetti a hungry junior can eat.
Kids under 10 can race the one-lap Kids Fun Race for free.
Race Duration / Distance
One thing that often
confuses new cross racers is how the times work. It's quite simple - you'll do
as many laps as you can to allow for most racers to get their time's worth of
racing. We do this by timing the first lap or two and then calculating how many
laps total it will take to meet the time without going too much over. For
example, in the half-hour C race, if riders are averaging 8 minute laps, the
race will be a 4 lap race to get about 32 minutes of racing. If the lap time
was 9 minutes, then we would make it a 3 lap race to get about 27 minutes of
racing. If we made it 4 laps the leader would finish in 36 minutes, and racers
farther back would be finishing at close to 45 minutes!
Another confusing thing is
what happens with lapped riders. Since this is a timed race, everyone finishes
on the leader's last lap, regardless of whether they are on the same lap or are
one or more laps behind. You do not have to finish out the same number of laps
as the leader. When the time is up, you're done.
Bicycle Requirements
Bicycles must have a working
drivetrain and brake system. That's it. You can ride any bike. We've had strong
teens on BMX bikes do extremely well. We do require that if you have
forward-facing barends, you take them off for the race.
Unicycles are exempt from the brake requirement, should you be the type of
person looking for a real challenge.
Pits and Feeds
We run designated pits and open feed zones at our races. This means that your spare wheels and bikes must be changed out in a designated pit area. Furthermore, if you experience a mechanical problem you must stay on the course until you reach the pit area to receive assistance. You may receive food or water on any part of the course. If we have enough volunteers, we try to pass out cups of water to racers.
